Anaesthesia is a highly specialised field of medicine where the practitioner is required to administer pain preventing anaesthetics while maintaining all major body functions during surgical procedures.

Anaesthetist jobs require correct determination of anaesthetics and sedatives to be used in surgery. Patient monitoring is also part of the job, and in a way, the anaesthetist has to take the greatest care of the patient, attending to him/her during and after the surgical procedure, as well as noting the patient's condition before, during and after surgery.

Anaesthetist jobs may also involve liaising with other health care providers to recommend diagnosis and treatment for patients suffering from chronic pain. Job opportunities are available in both major hospitals and health care facilities in relatively rural areas. In addition to the available locations, qualified candidates don't have to limit their practice to one particular field either, as there is a need for anaesthetists in general, paediatric, obstetric, cardiac, neurological and intensive care medicine. Outside of surgery, there are also a substantial number of pain management clinics who lack qualified personnel.

Anaesthetists who wish to explore new employment opportunities do not have to go it completely alone when looking for work in another country - there are a number of recruitment agencies specialising in matching individuals to the right job, and are conversant with the guidelines and procedures an applicant has to complete before working in the country.
